Powhattan High School Alumni Banquet

The 103rd annual Powhattan High School Alumni Banquet was held Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the Kickapoo Nation School in Powhattan, Kansas. The meeting opened with an invocation by President Steven McCrerey. The meal was prepared by Your Place and Mine of Holton, Kansas and served by the members of the Modern Sunflower 4-H Club.
Steve introduced guest speaker Jerry Draney, class of ’52. Jerry told about the writing of his book Kansas Basketball, the Evolution of Basketball in the Nation’s Heartland.
Marjorie Loyd presented a gift of a clock to Jerry and to Sharon Corrigan Kubik and a plaque to Ron and Anita Pfister.
President Steven McCrerey called the meeting to order. Marjorie Loyd, secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting. The minutes were approved as read. The treasurer’s report was given by Evelyn Skoch Lierz. There was a balance of $1002.00 after the 2017 banquet. Current balance is $1239.00.
Duane Loyd announced the American Legion post will hold memorial services on Monday at 9:15 at Kennekuk, 10:15 at Granada, and 11:00 at Powhattan. He also asked if there was interest in a Veterans’ Memorial in Powhattan.
Election was held for the 2019 officers. President Seven McCrerey, Vice-President Eli Wenger, Secretary Marjorie Loyd, and Treasurer Evelyn Skoch Lierz were elected by acclamation.

Present from the class of 1968, the 50 year class, were Wanda Barrett, Stephen DeVillier, Marilyn Finger, Robert Hall, Shon Johannes, Tom Lowe, Marsha Manley, Leo McClaskey, William Meyer, Diane Schmitt, Dale Schuetz, Allan Spellmeier, James Spellmeier, Joan Sunderland, Kathleen Wenger, and Dean Wenger.
Present from the class of 1963, the 55 year class, were Larry Adcock, Mary Lowe, Marjorie Loyd, Mary Schuetz, and Lane Sunderland.
Present from the 60 year class, the class of 1958, were Naomi Wenger and Patricia Wenger.
Present from the 1953 class, the 65 year class, were Maurice Cashman, Jr., Virgil Schmitt, and Gilbert Wenger.
Present from the class of 1948, the 70 year class, were Edward Finger, Valora McKee, Virginia Owen, and Betty Wenger.
Present from the 45 year class, the class of 1973, were Randy Ashton, Becky Heiniger, Cory Heiniger, Tim McClaskey, Allen Meyer, and Eldred Wenger.
Present from the 40 year class, the class of 1978, was Rebecca Skoch.
All other graduates were introduced.
The Powhattan fire department will hold its annual pancake breakfast tomorrow morning from 7:00-1:00 at the firehouse.
Thanks were given to the officers for planning a successful dinner and meeting.

President Steven McCrerey called the meeting to order. Marjorie Loyd, secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting. A correction was made. The treasurer’s report was given by Evelyn Skoch Lierz. There was a balance of $1246.90 after the 2016 banquet. Current balance is $1002. Steve thanked the caterer, the 4-H Club, the Kickapoo Nation School, and Jeanne Chadwell Dowell for printing the programs. He introduced and thanked Clarence Pollock, retired teacher at 103 years old.
Sharon Corrigan Kubik gave a report on the book that Jerry Draney is writing about Powhattan High School, PHS Basketball, and Johnnie Corrigan. The book is being edited by Ron and Anita Wenger Pfister and Sharon and should be published this year. Sharon asked that members send stories about their time at PHS to Jerry on the phsbasketball.net website. She also asked for names to be added to photos.
