From the Powhattan Year Book by Tim Sullivan, Editor
Powhattan High School opened its 1951 round ball campaign with an all veteran squad consisting of the following boys: Jerald Draney, Tim Sullivan, Clair Krebs, Lowell Moser, Gary Bearce, John Schumann and Robert Schumann.
During the season's play they won 25 games and lost 3. The losses were to Hiawatha, the Big Six Champions and a strong Atchison Class A team, and a loss to Natoma in the State Tournament.
Finished in final four in State Tournament play. Consolation game not played resulting in tie for third place.
They were successful in winning the Brown County Championship in both the A and B division. The Senior players have had a unique experience in basketball during their high school career. When they were Freshmen they entered as a B team and won the County Championship in that division. For the last three years they have represented the first team and have been the County Champions each of these years in the Class A division. In other words they have been on a championship team every year they have been in High School. An article in Hiawatha Daily World of December 3, 1948 Mr. Corrigan was quoted as saying "The freshman team shows signs of being the strongest the school has ever had. Thirteen freshmen are out for basketball.

In 1952 the Powhattan High School entered the District Tournament at Troy, Kansas on the 27th of February where they won their second tournament of the season. The Red Devils met Troy on the opening night and won by a score of 58 to 36. On the second night they played Highland and this time were victorious by a 51 to 39 score. Having won these first two games the Red Devils qualified to play in the finals where they met the Horton Hornets. In this game the Red Devils hit a high percentage of their shots and the result was a defeat for the Horton team by a 64 to 38 score.
On the 5th of March the Red Devils journeyed to Linn, Kansas to participate in the Regional Tournament where again they won first place. On the first night the Powhattan team defeated Solomon 60 to 32. In the semi-finals the Red Devils met a strong Washington team, but managed to come out with a victory by a 39 to 35 score. Powhattan played Seneca Catholic in the finals and defeated them by a score of 60 to 44 to take first place and a trip to the State Tournament held at Hutchinson, Kansas.
On March 12 the Red Devils started their journey to the highest achievement that a high school basketball team can acquire, the State Basketball Tournament at Hutchinson, Kansas. During the State Tournament the team stayed at the Hotel Stamey. The Red Devils played Gridley in the opening round and won that game by a score of 58 to 50. In their next game a cold but fighting Red Devil team lost to Natoma High School by a 48 to 35 score. In this game Powhattan was behind by a wide margin in the first quarter but seemed to be slowly gaining on their opponents and was only seven points behind when Robert Schumann their big center left the game by the five foul route. With his loss went our hopes for the State Championship finals. There was no consolation game so the team finished tied for 3rd place in the State Tournament.

Atchison Daily Globe, January 27, 1952
Johnny Corrigan, who brings his Powhattan High School cagers to Atchison the night of Feb. 9 to clash with the Atchison Redmen in a March of Dimes game at Memorial Hall, is no stranger in this city.
During his 26 years Johnny has coached basketball at Powhattan, his teams have appeared on many occasions and have always done well. In fact they have probably won a majority of the games played.
When Powhattan and Atchison met on the maples back in 1945, Powhattan won by 11-point margin.
Corrigan has come up with some great teams in the past. His quintets have made two trips to the state AA tournament and six to the Class B tourney. One of his teams won third place in the state meet and another fourth place.
This year Corrigan has another blazing outfit. It has won 11 of 12 games played - losing the one contest to Hiawatha by a two-point margin, 39-37
The Red Devils have walloped Horton, Sabetha, Effingham, Fairview twice, Robinson twice, Highland, Morrill, Hamlin and Reserve. Playing Powhattan’s starting combination are Jerald Draney 6-0 and Clair Krebs 5-8 forwards; Robert Schumann 6-3 center, and Tim Sullivan 6-0 and Lowell Moser 5-9 guards.
Draney has averaged 20 points a game and Robert Schumann has banked 12.
Reserve members of the varsity are John Schumann 6-1, center; Gary Bearce 5-9 guard; Virgil Schmidt 5-9 forward; Jack Vantilburg 6-2 guard and Jerry Couch 5.9 guard.
These 10 boys were all members of Powhattan’s football team that was undefeated last fall. The Atchison High A Club will operate the refreshment stand at the game.

Redmen Whip Red Devils
By Jerry Brown Atchison Daily Globe Feb 11, 1952
Atchison’s Redmen, after trailing much of the way, smacked over the powhattan Red Devils Saturday night, 44 - 37, on the Memorial hall court. It was the second loss for the Red Devils in 15 starts.
The game was played for the March of Dimes with all of the proceeds going to fight polio.
The Red Devils one of the best Class B teams in Kansas, were much in the game until the final quarter. In fact, the Redmen never were in the lead until Bill Holmers took the second half tip-off and scored on a lay up to put Atchison in front 20 - 19.
Atchison was a cold as the Arctic in January during the first half as they hit only seven of 37 shots for 18 percent. Powhattan took only 13 shots in the first half but hit five of them and canned nine free throws to hold a 19 - 18 halftime margin.
Holmes lead the redmen in the second half as the lanky senior scored 10 of his 13 points on three driving lay-ups and four charities.
Jerald Draney who previously had a 20-point average.got 11 points for Johnny Corrigan’s five but yielded team scoring honors to Bob Schumann, a 6 ft. 3 inch center who hit 12. Eddie Scarlett did a good job of holding Draney down.
In the preliminary game between two seventh grade teams the Reds led by David Throning’s eight points downed the Blues 16 - 12. The losers were led by Gene Hurst who got six points.

Comments 1952 Season by J. Draney
I felt the 1952 team had a successful season with a couple of big dissapointments. Our loss to Hiawatha is a game we should have won easily. The missing of a layup in the closing seconds was a shot that I would hope to normally easily make at least 99 out of 100 times. That would have put the game into overtime one being the State Tournament

Teammates Pictures Below
Pictures of the 1952 team members as we look today, kind of, this is the starting line up, starting top row and left to right: Robert (Bob) Schumann 6'3" center, rebounder great inside shooter - watch your fowls Bob remember 5 is too many , Tim Sullivan, 6'0" (Tim and Lowell were always assigned to guard the leading scorers and not allow them to shoot the ball), Jerald (Jerry) Draney that is me - remember when you start to dribble the ball must be released from your hand before your pivot foot moves, but you may take one step if you shoot the ball before the foot comes to rest on the floor - why didn't you figure this out in Hutch?, Lowell Moser lower right, put your guy in hand cuffs if you have to and I know you will - how do you expect us to win if they score too many points - stop smiling you guys it was not funny!. And the last guy is Clair Krebs, the fastest man on the team (perhaps one of the fastest in the state) and finally the picture of the goal with the ball going through the hoop. Remember, the object is to put the ball through the hoop more times than your opponents. Sounds pretty simple. Clair, as soon as the opponents shoot you will start towards our goal and run like crazy and when one of us gets the rebound you will be open and we will wing the ball to you. Remember that, how good we did that in beating Horton in the District finals in Troy, 1952. That was Corrigan's halftime strategy. And when you get to the other end put the ball in the basket. Don't forget any of this. Tim, you must get serious and stop laughing.
And remember our total score is always divided by 5 - we don't have a high point man, only in the newspapers.
